Thandie Newton has been nominated for a Golden Globe for her role as Maeve Millay on Westworld–and we think she should win.

Who doesn’t love Maeve Millay from Westworld? Maeve is the gift that keeps on giving and has already won Thandie Newton an Emmy for her performance. So, now that Newton’s also been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, we’ve got our fingers crossed that Newton wins for the spunky character that is Maeve.

Coming fresh off her Emmy win, we are crossing our fingers for another win! How wonderful would this be? Granted, there are some really phenomenal actresses nominated for the same award from shows such as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Handmaid’s Tale.

However, we believe Newton is a candidate that stands alone and should take home the award in the end. But don’t take my word for it, here’s a nifty list of reasons why Newton should win the Golden Globe.

Thandie Newton’s performance

Maeve is easily a likable character because she has a penchant for snark, quips, and is straightforward about she wants. But if it weren’t for Newton’s skills, we would have never seen Maeve for what she is. Newton brought the character to life, and in the second season of Westworld she raised the stakes and took Maeve to a whole new level.

Newton already won an Emmy in the same category

It’s not a prerequisite for winning the Golden Globe, but I think it counts that Newton already snagged the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress earlier this year. The Academy recognized Newton’s dramatic contributions to Westworld and the Hollywood Foreign Press should follow suit.

Maeve is a complex character

While some characters follow arcs that have been seen time and time again, Maeve has an altogether different profile. She’s gone from the madam at a brothel to a renegade. And to add to her already complex story, Maeve has a love story and a dedicated arc as a mother.

She is desperately trying to save her daughter although she knows that biologically the child is not really her own. And I haven’t even started on her self discovery and powers. I’d say manifesting all of those details into one season instantly qualifies Newton for the win.

Maeve is Westworld’s star

Westworld is an award-winning series that has put a lot of work into writing and developing a very unique TV show. As the main character of the show, Dolores should be the only one reaping the VIP quality benefits of what the creators have invested into the show. However, Maeve is undoubtedly the star and its a by-product of the creators writing some really good material.

Newton would be the second black actress to win the award in history

There’s definitely some historical incentive to give Newton the Golden Globe. The Golden Derby reported that if Newton wins, she would be the second black woman to hold the award. The first black woman to win the award was Gail Fisher in 1971 for her role in Mannix.

It’s a sad truth that in the history of the Golden Globes only one black woman has ever won this award. This is precisely why it should go to Newton for her talent while simultaneously making history.

Newton has had a fantastic year on Westworld, and we hope that she’s awarded for all the work she has put into the show. Don’t forget to tune in to The 76th Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 6, 2019. Here’s to hoping Newton takes home the award for Westworld!
