Who Is The Judas Steer In Westworld?
All it takes is one steer to lead the heard. Did the trailer to Westworld Season 2 hint at who is the real Judas steer?
Bulls on parade. At least, that’s the image that stuck in our minds when we watched the newest trailer to Westworld Season 2. Jonathan Nolan directed this trailer, and he wanted the opening to fool us into thinking it was typical car commercial. But then the slow-motion bulls plowing through the Delos security guards knocked us out of our comfort zone. This mesmerizing scene reminded us of the time when Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood) told Teddy (James Marsden) of the Judas steer. People are still debating who could be the Judas leading a group to their own demise.
In the first episode of season one, Dolores explains to Teddy that the Judas steer is one that the rest of herd blindly follows. Usually they are led to their own slaughter. Little did we know that Dolores was using this story as a metaphor for the chaos that is to come.
Let’s take a look at the possible characters who could be a possible Judas steer.
Maeve Leads The Stampede
As soon as those bulls start charging at the security guards, we see Maeve (Thandie Newton) front and center. It’s possible that Maeve could represent the steer in charge. In the
she’s literally leading the bulls. In season 1, we do know that she became sentient and had the ability to control other hosts in the park.
But people have speculated that she does not have full sentience. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins) actually planned Maeve’s “awakening”, and it she was used a diversion to keep the guards busy while he executed his final story line. And Maeve was leading her small band of criminals that included Hector (Rodrigo Santoro) and Armistice (Ingrid Bolsø Berdal). But we know that these characters are appearing in season 2. So she isn’t leading anyone to any slaughter. Even if Dolores started her sentience by whispering those magic words: These violent delights, have violent ends.
Dolores Knows All About The Judas Steer
It was Dolores who started the whole Judas steer story. Her character’s arc showed how she went from a host living its loop to breaking free of its routine. As she progressed through the maze, she became more and more alive. To the point where she fully embodied the Wyatt role and killed Robert Ford. Thus, completing his story line and setting off a chain reaction of sentient hosts. Now the rebellion begins.
It all began with Dolores. In the trailer, we see her gunning down the guests of the park. In some scenes, it appeared that she was leading Wyatt’s masked soldiers. If Dolores is the Judas steer, then why would the hosts blindly follower her? That would mean she’s just using the other hosts as a means to wipe out all the humans. Yes, it’s possible that she will take control Westworld and seek revenge against those that harmed all the hosts. But it doesn’t quite follow metaphor.
Right now, it’s hard to believe that there’s a huge leap from Dolores the simple farmer’s daughter to the destroyer of worlds. Even if she does have the Wyatt programming her, that simple daughter program is what lead her to being sentient. And both programs were created by Ford and Arnold.
Dr. Ford Was The Judas Steer
All roads point back to Robert Ford. His character fits the Judas steer metaphor perfectly. His entire goal was to set the hosts free of loops. Once he realized that Arnold was right about the hosts becoming sentient, he set his plan into action.
As one of the head co-creators of Westworld, all eyes were focused on him and his story. He created this whole story to lure the investors. Once they were there in attendance, Ford unleashed his fury upon the park. In reality, he made himself the Judas steer, and the humans were led into the slaughter. Now we’ll see the aftermath of his devious plan.
